Project Overview
The 2026 Middletown World Trade Center Memorial Gardens Improvements Project was undertaken to preserve, enhance, and modernize one of the Township’s most significant civic and commemorative spaces ahead of the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Located by the Middletown Arts Center, the Memorial Gardens serve as a lasting tribute to the 37 Middletown residents who lost their lives on 9/11 and provide a place for remembrance, reflection, and community gathering.
Preparation for these improvements began in 2019 when the township committee received input from residents on how to utilize extra materials available from the twin towers. With an investment of $1.55 million, the project focused on improving the visitor experience while preserving the dignity and historical significance of the memorial.
T&M provided engineering, site, electrical design, and construction administration & inspection services. Key project site enhancements included the restoration and reconstruction of the memorial pathway system, replacement of deteriorated walking surfaces with upgraded paver walkways, installation of new concrete monument foundations, enhanced bollard and accent lighting, upgraded irrigation systems, improved landscaping, and the addition of decorative benches throughout the site. New pond aeration systems were also incorporated to improve the functionality and appearance of water features within the gardens.
A critical component of the project involved the careful temporary relocation, protection, and reinstallation of existing granite monuments, memorials, and benches. This included the first responder and military memorials as well as the memorial dedicated to individuals who lost their lives to 9/11-related illnesses.
By enhancing accessibility, aesthetics, and long-term maintainability, this important site improvements project ensures that the World Trade Center Memorial Gardens will continue to serve future generations. The improvements reinforce Middletown’s commitment to honoring the memory of its fallen residents in a peaceful and welcoming environment throughout the year.
