T&M provided engineering design services for the demolition of the existing municipal building and the construction of a new 30,000 SF, 3-story building. The new facility will house the Borough of Bergenfield’s police, court, and administrative operations, and consists of offices, meeting rooms, dispatch, holding areas, sally port, locker and shower rooms, judge’s chambers, and courtroom.
Our environmental team was tasked with identifying asbestos-containing materials, lead-based paint, refrigerants, and materials currently treated under USEPA’s universal waste program, that could impact the demolition of the existing building. Additionally, they obtained NJDEP Flood Hazard approvals and worked through regulatory constraints with the NJDEP to allow the redevelopment of the parcel.
Demolition of the existing building includes removal of the existing structure and foundation, infill of the existing basement, and rerouting of utilities for reconnection to the new building. The new municipal building’s mechanical systems are comprised of packaged air handling unit with variable air volume boxes to serve the various spaces. LED lighting systems with occupancy sensors are implemented throughout. The building structure consists of steel framing, interior metal studs, and exterior masonry veneer.
