Avantor Landfill and Parking Lot Solar Redevelopment

T&M Associates partnered with Redaptive on a complex solar redevelopment initiative for Avantor in Phillipsburg, NJ, transforming underutilized industrial land into a hub for clean energy. The project featured a dual-site design: a ballasted ground-mounted solar array atop a closed, capped landfill and a solar canopy system over an active industrial parking lot, maximizing land use efficiency and renewable energy output.

As a sub-consultant to Redaptive, T&M provided a full range of services, including environmental, electrical, automation, site, and construction management. The use of ballasted solar arrays preserved the integrity of the landfill cap by eliminating ground disturbance, while the solar canopies delivered additional on-site energy generation without interrupting ongoing operations.

The project voluntarily implemented stormwater management enhancements, including meadowland conversion and pervious surface design, to reduce runoff. despite not being classified as a major development. T&M also played a critical role in navigating a complex regulatory landscape, helping the project secure multiple permits at the municipal, county, and state levels, including NJDEP landfill disruption and stormwater discharge approvals.

The project goes beyond just the technical work. It helps the environment, cuts down on carbon emissions, and gives new purpose to old industrial land, showing how smart design can benefit both people and the planet.
