T&M provided structural design engineering and civil engineering for a new 60,000 SF, three-story intermediate school building which includes composite steel design with interior concrete block partition walls. Being that the school is located within an existing flood plain, the structure is elevated 2’ above the base flood elevations allowing for flood storage space below the supported first story. The site also has as an underground detention basin with an outlet control structure to provide stormwater quantity reductions. A flap gate was installed to prevent floodwaters from backing up into the system. A steel framed connecting bridge structure allows access from the 2nd floor of the new school to the 2nd floor of the existing high school building, which is 7’ lower. The foundation of the existing high school building was unknown and therefore the bridge included cantilever beams from new columns placed approximately 6 feet away from the existing school.
