Project Overview

T&M was selected by the City of Hoboken to develop the final design and construction documents for the redesign of Washington Street, as well as provide construction inspection and observation services, which involved enhancements to improve pedestrian safety, expand access to mass transit, and accommodate an increase in multimodal activity and use to support residents, businesses, visitors and commuters. This Complete Streets revitalization project followed an extensive community-based planning process conducted by the City to solicit public feedback and gain consensus. Prior to the design effort, T&M conducted a feasibility analysis of the initially preferred alternatives.

The project also sought to improve the existing utilities within the project area by upgrading all the existing water mains and services, upgrading the stormwater system including green infrastructure, upgrading the street lighting, and installing infrastructure for a future microgrid. The project included transportation improvements with new ADA complaint sidewalks and the resurfacing of the entire roadway.

The final design incorporated a mix of progressive design elements that are focused on multi-modal travel, enhancing safety and modernizing this vital downtown corridor. The major design elements that were incorporated into the design include:

  • Curb extensions at all 16 intersections including green infrastructure consisting of 15 rain gardens
  • Dedicated bike lanes with “GREEN” pavement markings
  • Hi-visibility crosswalks
  • All new traffic signal systems with lead pedestrian intervals, countdown timers, and ADA compliant pushbuttons
  • Back-in angle parking
  • Dedicated loading zones
  • “RED” painted bus stops
  • New LED lighting
  • Microgrid Infrastructure
  • New water mains
