NJ Revitalization: Tapping Liquid Gold

Woodbridge Township is revitalizing the Sewaren waterfront district along the Arthur Kill waterway and Raritan River. This ambitious project, funded by grants from the Middlesex County Open Space Trust Fund and state government grants, includes the purchase and renovation of several marinas. Significant improvements have been made, such as the extensive environmental cleanup and redevelopment of the neglected Pirate’s Cove marina.

At the heart of the redevelopment is Anchors Tiki Bar at Smith’s Creek & Sewaren Marina Recreation Area. This innovative, pet-friendly venue features a flood-resistant design, accommodating 215 patrons, and includes specialty food trucks, a picnic grove, and a stage for live performances. The project also extends the Sewaren Riverwalk, providing enhanced accessibility and enjoyment for residents and visitors.

Future enhancements include final marina dredging, dock reconstruction, and “dock and dine” slips for boating enthusiasts. A new state grant will support an expanded dog park and additional boat storage facilities. Plans also envision a bridge over Smith’s Creek and a “living shoreline” for environmental resilience. These initiatives, combined with Woodbridge’s extensive recreational facilities, reaffirm the township’s commitment to offering exceptional quality of life, solidifying its reputation as “The Best Town Around.”
