Getz Addresses the 2024 Federal Flood Risk Management Standard at ASFPM Conference

Anton Getz’s presentation at the Association of State Floodplain Managers (ASFPM) Conference highlighted some key developments in flood risk management and how the new federal standards compare to NJ state standards.

FEMA is placing significant focus and effort on the Federal Flood Risk Management Standard (FFRMS) in 2024. FFRMS is a federal policy mandating increases in future flooding be accounted for in federal construction projects.

The State of New Jersey has long had more stringent floodplain development standards as compared to the minimum FEMA National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) standards, including the recent adoption of NJ Inland Flood Protection Rules (IFPR- July 2023). The NJ IFPR amendments include raising the NJ design flood elevation (DFE) by several feet above FEMA’s current 1% annual chance flood elevation.
