As we observe Veterans Day, we look forward to bringing an important new project to life for our veterans in Middletown. In 2021, the Township announced the purchase of a former tool rental property on Leonardsville Road, in the Belford section of town, to redevelop into affordable housing rental units for U.S. veterans. The property acquisition was funded by the Middletown Affordable Housing Trust Fund, and the nonprofit Middletown Redevelopment Corporation was established to oversee the project.
Middletown is the largest municipality in Monmouth County, and as our residents can attest, it’s a great place to live. Our proximity to the Jersey Shore and Raritan Bayshore regions, access to top schools and healthcare, and ideal location for city commuting are along the many reasons the township has been named among the nation’s best places to live by Time Magazine, among others.
The Middletown Veterans’ Housing project will provide 12 affordable residential units within a three-story, 21,660-square-foot multifamily building. The site covers a total of four parcels in the vicinity of the Campbell’s Junction section of Middletown. The ground level will feature parking spaces, and the second and third stories will feature six units per floor, with an activity room and lounge on each floor. The facility will be constructed above base flood elevation, and the project will include not only parking, but also drainage improvements, landscaping, and lighting. Partners for the project include the Middletown Housing Authority as well as T&M Associates, which assisted with cost-estimating services and will perform construction administration and inspection services.
The Township and stakeholders are lining up additional funding sources, so the full timeline for the project hasn’t been set. We look forward to sharing updates as this project takes shape, and we move closer to introducing a new, safe and affordable housing option for veterans and their families in Middletown.
