Perry County, OH was awarded $500,000 in grant funding from the Ohio Department of Development’s Building Demolition & Site Revitalization Program. The funds will be used to demolish abandoned, decrepit houses in the Villages of Corning, Hemlock and Shawnee and outdated municipal buildings no longer being used. In all, 25 properties will be demolished and the sites restored improving property values and increasing revitalization opportunities in these communities.
The City of Barberton was awarded $450,000 from the Ohio Department of Development’s Brownfield Remediation Program. A portion of the funds ($200,000) will be used to remediate the historic Powell & Herald building downtown that served as the home of the Barberton Herald newspaper for many decades along with several other commercial businesses. Once remediation is complete, the property will be redeveloped as a commercial and residential mixed-used complex.
The remaining funds ($250,000) will be used to assess the South Van Buren Avenue Quarry Lake parcels. This site was historically a landfill, auto salvage yard, sand and gravel quarry, and asphalt plant. Following assessment, there are plans to redevelop the site as a recreational campground centered around the lake and the adjacent Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail.
