T&M Nabs Grand Honor at ACEC’S Engineering Excellence Awards

March 26, 2019

Middletown, NJ – T&M Associates, a leading national engineering, environmental and consulting firm, announced that it has received the Grand Honor Award in the Non-Transportation Project category by the American Council of Engineering Companies of New Jersey (ACEC-NJ) at their 2019 Engineering Excellence Awards Banquet. T&M was honored for their collaboration and innovative design work for Berkeley Island County Park (now John C. Bartlett Jr. County Park at Berkeley Island) in Ocean County, New Jersey. The ACEC-NJ Engineering Excellence Awards recognize and honor consulting engineering firms whose efforts demonstrate both superior skill and the highest degree of creativity. The recipient firms exhibit true excellence in the profession and the projects honored have a significant impact on the public.

Berkeley Island County Park sits on a 25-acre peninsula that juts into the Barnegat Bay. It was devastated by Superstorm Sandy in 2012 and sustained catastrophic damage to its infrastructure and amenities. There was a great loss of shoreline and severe erosion.

Living shorelines, stone revetments, off-shore breakwaters, and a new bulkhead were used to reestablish the shoreline and protect the park from future erosion and storms. Local dredging materials were utilized to raise the elevation of the park so that most amenities are now above the base flood elevation level. The innovative design methods used will help establish a set of guidelines for future shoreline stabilization projects along the coast.

The park is comprised of all new amenities including the County’s first spray park! Other features include a revitalized 100-foot fishing/crabbing pier, bait cutting stations with water service, restrooms, gazebos, a covered pavilion, a playground, horseshoe pits, shuffleboard courts and a boardwalk.

Effective collaboration amongst the many team members was essential to the successful completion of this project. The project team had some major challenges – reacquiring eroded land from the state, a long and tedious permitting process, developing innovative designs to reduce erosion and damage from future storms, and a construction schedule hampered by a long, cold winter with four Nor’easters – but the park was still able to be reopened to the public in time for Memorial Day Weekend (2018) as planned.
