Ocean County Living Shoreline Receives NJ Grand Honor in Engineering Excellence Awards

July 29, 2020

The American Council of Engineering Companies of New Jersey (ACEC-NJ) awarded T&M Associates’ living shoreline restoration in the Little Egg Harbor and Tuckerton, NJ municipalities the Grand Honor in the Non-Transportation category in its 2020 Engineering Excellence Awards. The project was undertaken in the wake of severe impacts from Superstorm Sandy and was completed in September 2019.

In 2012, both municipalities had sustained heavy damages from Sandy, particularly shoreline areas that were left all but completely eroded and vulnerable to additional future harm. T&M employed an innovative living shoreline model to combat erosion, restore and stabilize beaches, establish and strengthen natural habitats, and protect existing infrastructure and homes. Previously this model had limited use within restricted elevations and far from residential areas, but T&M incorporated new elements to expand the viability of a living shoreline in more diverse areas while maintaining affordability for the relevant communities.

ACEC-NJ’s annual Engineering Excellence Awards competition recognizes and celebrates engineering achievements that demonstrate the highest degree of skill and ingenuity among firms throughout the state of New Jersey. There were 32 project entries and of those, three were then chosen for Grand Honors in the categories Small Projects, Large Projects, and Non-Transportation.
