Updates to the New Jersey Coastal Management Program

May 8, 2020

Public Comment Period from May 1 – June 1, 2020

Every 5 years the New Jersey Coastal Management Program must go through an assessment process as regulated by Section 309 of the Coastal Zone Management Act (CZMA). The NJDEP has released the draft 309 Assessment and has issued a 30-day public comment period from May 1 – June 1, 2020. T&M encourages all coastal municipalities and developers to familiarize themselves with the draft assessment and strategy and to submit comments during the public comment period.

T&M’s Regional Environmental Practice Leader, Kris Krzyston, is familiar with the proposed amendment and has developed a summary of draft.

Changes to New Jersey’s CMP for the 2021-2025 cycle may result in more stringent coastal regulations and provide opportunities for municipalities to implement living shorelines and other coastal protection as well as further promote resiliency.

The draft of Section 309 Amendment is linked here providing more details. More information can also be found on the NJDEP website.
