Are living shoreline projects less expensive than bulkheads?

As landowners consider living shorelines, two recurring questions arise: 1) Are they effective? and 2) How much do they cost? Living shorelines are promoted for their multiple benefits; therefore, answering these questions of completed projects is important. The Nature Conservancy and Stevens Institute of Technology published a study analyzing living shoreline projects in New Jersey ranging in size, complexity, and cost. One of the five projects evaluated was Ocean County’s in Berkeley Island County Park (now John C. Bartlett, Jr. County Park).

It was determined that living shoreline projects are less expensive than bulkheads.
